When Empathy Is Misused

When Empathy Is Misused

Scripture: “Do not be envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; for their heart devises violence, and their lips talk of trouble.” – Proverbs 24:1–2

Reflection:
There’s a growing message in the world that says we must extend empathy—even to those who openly despise us, speak harm against us, or plan destruction for people like us. But empathy is not meant to be forced. God never asked us to excuse cruelty or to place our hearts unguarded in the hands of those who abuse.

True compassion is wise, discerning, and safe. It recognizes pain without confusing it with permission. Empathy does not mean we must call evil good, or stand silent while others are torn down. Scripture reminds us that some hearts “devise violence” and some lips “speak of trouble.” We can acknowledge this reality without surrendering our dignity.

Encouragement:
You are not commanded to erase the boundaries God gives for your safety. To protect your heart, to guard your dignity, to stand firm in your right to live free from abuse—that is holy.

Prayer:
Lord, give me discernment in love. Teach me to show compassion without surrendering my safety, dignity, or rights. Guard my heart from the voices of harm, and keep me rooted in Your truth. Amen.
