God’s love is not meant to shine only on a few, but to light the way for all.
Scripture:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:14–16 (NIV)
Living Parable:
Picture a lamp in the center of a dark room. If it tilts to one side, that part of the room glows warmly, but the rest stays in shadow. That’s what happens when we show love only to those who look like us, think like us, or make us comfortable. The light becomes partial. The shadows deepen, and those left in darkness stumble.
True Christian love stands upright, steady and unwavering. It does not choose favorites or shrink back from difference. Instead, it shines outward in every direction, casting light on all who enter the room. It reveals the beauty of God’s people the way light reveals the details of a painting — every color, every texture, every stroke of the Creator’s hand.
And we must remember: we did not create the house or the lamp — God did. Just as each flower in His garden is uniquely designed, each person is illuminated by His love in their own way. Our calling is not to control the beam but to reflect the Source.
When we love like this — not as a narrow spotlight, but as a lamp on a stand — we draw others closer to God, not ourselves. The light belongs to Him, and we are vessels called to let it shine freely.
Future Study Prompt:
Read 1 John 4:7–12. Reflect: Does my love shine equally, or do I tilt toward what feels safe and familiar? Where might God be inviting me to set my lamp upright so that His love can reach everyone in the room?
